Group Spotlight - Back Bay Ringers

Back Bay Ringers Merge Music, People and History

Back Bay Ringers (BBR) is an advanced, auditioned handbell ensemble. Under the direction of Griff Gall, BBR has quickly developed a reputation for excellence, regularly performing at Boston-area landmarks such as Faneuil Hall, Symphony Hall, the Boston Children's Museum, and the Prudential Center. They made their debut with the Boston Pops in 2016, and have also performed in festivities associated with the Democratic National Convention, the Boston Marathon and the national conference of the Handbell Musicians of America. BBR performs both as a large ensemble and in smaller quartets throughout the year in both public settings and for private bookings. BBR has released three recordings: Merry and Bright, Perpetual Motion, and Comfort and Joy.

Beyond the Music

BBR was founded in 2004 as the nation's first handbell ensemble dedicated to members and friends of the LGBT community and it remains open and affirming for membership, board and community. In addition to the annual holiday concerts, BBR annually sponsors the Boston Handbell Festival which has resulted in the donation of eleven sets of Malmark Choirchimes to local public schools.

BBR is committed to preserving and promoting Boston's key role in the history of our instrument. The first community handbell ensemble in the United States was founded by Beacon Hill resident Margaret Shurcliff in the early twentieth century. More than a hundred years later, Back Bay Ringers is proud to honor that tradition and carry it into the twenty-first century by exposing new audiences to handbells in Boston and beyond.

Christmas with Back Bay Ringers

Their 2017 Christmas concerts are focused on Our Favorite Things. They surveyed friends and BBR followers and asked what they would like to hear; inviting them to share stories related to their holiday favorites. Audiences will hear arrangements of the Ukrainian Bell Carol, Mary, Did You Know?, It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year and the West Indies Carol. BBR is also excited to perform the premier of a newly commissioned work from Susan Nelson, a sweet, gentle arrangement of the Italian carol, Tu scendi dalle stelle.
