Barbara Peaker discovered bells at age 18 after moving to a new town and discovering that her new church was lucky enough to be the only one in the county with handbells. She knew instantly she wanted to learn this unique instrument. Barbara had always been an avid musician, learning many instruments throughout her childhood including piano, flute, clarinet, and violin, many of which were self-taught. After learning about handbells, Barbara began to do quartet and duet ringing and within a couple years became a solo ringer and youth handbell director. She now enjoys arranging her own music for solo handbell ringing.
Barbara enjoys volunteering as a handbell director and mentoring youth ringers as well as performing at fundraising events. She has been the director of the Charming Chimers, Heavenly Metal, the Altones, the Homeschool chime choir and was the director of the Alliston Golden Bells for two years. She also rings with her home church, the Bells of Westminster. She has won three scholarships for her solo ringing through the Orangeville and District Music Festival.
In her spare time, Barbara enjoys volunteering for the Ontario Guild of English Handbell Ringers (OGEHR). She serves as the coordinator of their Instrument Loan Program, a program that lends handbells to churches, schools and other community groups for one-year periods. Barbara also volunteers on the OGEHR Education Committee working towards creating a curriculum for bells and chimes in schools. Barbara is a traveling artist with the "Artists in the Schools" program and with a ringing friend, they bring handbells and chime workshops to students in Southern Ontario that may not otherwise get to experience music in their education. Barbara is a graduate of Lakehead University with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Psychology. Barbara is the Eastern Canada Sales Representative for Malmark Bellcraftsmen.
Barbara currently lives in the very small town of Everett, Ontario, Canada, with her husband and two dogs, and a future handbell ringer on the way in September 2018. She is excited to become a parent and hopes her daughter loves music as much as she does. Since the family dog is already named "Melody" Barbara is working on other musical names to use for the new addition!
Barbara represents Malmark in Ontario, Canada and East. Please contact her at (519) 940-1862 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
